Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Getting Started in the Prologue Demo
From first boot to your opening large-monster hunt — no skipped tutorials, no wasted time.
The Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is a free, offline trial that runs from the opening story through the beginning of Chapter 1-3: To the Forest. It is the best way to learn whether Wilds fits your platform and playstyle before spending money on the full game. This guide covers everything from installation to your first meaningful hunt against Chatacabra, with pointers to deeper pages on combat, Seikret travel, and the full mission walkthrough.
Download and platform notes
Grab the demo from your platform store: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam. The package is separate from the main Monster Hunter Wilds listing — search for Prologue Demo explicitly. Install size is modest compared to the full game, but allow extra space for shader compilation on PC the first time you launch.
The demo is offline only. You cannot join friends, use SOS flares, or test online co-op. Treat it as a single-player preview of early Chapter 1. For store links and version notes, see our Demo overview.
Save transfer before you begin
Capcom allows save transfer from the demo to the full game on the same platform, but only if you do not already have an advanced full-game save on that account. If you own Wilds and have dozens of hours logged, start a demo save knowing it may not merge. If you are evaluating a purchase, finish the demo first, then buy and import — details are on the demo page.
Character creation and Palico
On first launch you pass through accessibility prompts — arachnophobic players should read Accessibility Settings and enable Arachnophobia Assistance before creating a character if needed. Then build your Hunter and Palico companion.
Take your time here: appearance carries over with save transfer. More importantly, pick a weapon type you are curious about. The demo grants all 14 weapons; you are not locked forever, but your first hours shape muscle memory. Uncertain players should skim Weapon Training and the weapon guide before committing.
Opening minutes: camp, scoutflies, and Seikret
Early story missions introduce the Forbidden Lands, your support crew, and basic traversal. Scoutflies glow and lead you toward objectives — follow them when quest markers feel vague. Your Seikret mount appears quickly; press the directional inputs taught in the tutorial to call it for auto-routing or manual control. Riding lets you sharpen, heal, and access a secondary weapon without standing still in danger. Full mount controls are in Seikret and Slinger.
You will also set up pop-up camps — portable rest points where you cook meals and manage inventory. Meals grant stat boosts that matter more than you expect in early hunts. Do not skip the cooking tutorial; read Crafting and Meals for what to prioritize.
First combat: small monsters and the Slinger
Before Chatacabra, missions teach the Slinger: stone pods, capture net for endemic life, and later utility ammo like Dung Pods for creating space. Practice aiming while sheathed and note that you can fire certain Slinger shots even in Focus Mode — a detail covered in Combat Basics.
Small monster kills teach carving, material loops, and Palico gathering. They are not filler; they stock items for traps and healing.
Defeat Chatacabra — your first large monster
The demo’s first true gate is Chatacabra, an amphibian-style early target. The in-game tutorial prompts teach dodging, attacking weak zones, and landing your first Focus Strikes on wounds. If you want a dedicated fight plan — tell signs, breakable parts, and carving reminders — open How to Beat Chatacabra alongside the quest.
After victory, carve the body, turn in the quest, and continue the story toward the Scarlet Forest and Lala Barina. Monster ecology and drop tables sit on the monsters hub.
What comes after Chatacabra
The demo continues through:
- Village of Whispering Winds — Plains camp rhythm and Chapter 1-2 story tasks.
- Story setup toward the Scarlet Forest in To the Forest — the fifth main quest and demo endpoint.
- Retail-only continuation in Forest Findings with Lala Barina and Congalala after save transfer.
Use the walkthrough for exact step order and NPC dialogue triggers. Boss guides apply after you import into the full game.
Settings worth toggling early
Beyond accessibility, adjust camera distance, control scheme, and aim assist if you are on controller. Wilds Focus Mode binds to aim inputs; confirm whether you prefer hold or toggle in the options menu before boss fights. Dual wielders coming from other action games should verify dodge and guard mappings — they differ per weapon.
Demo checklist before you finish
- Try at least two weapon types via Seikret swap or the training area.
- Cook a meal at every new pop-up camp.
- Craft Shock Traps or Flash Pods before Lala Barina and Congalala.
- Enable accessibility options from the title screen if any creature design bothers you.
- Confirm whether you will import save data before purchasing the full game.

The Prologue Demo is short but dense. Treat the opening hours as a structured course in Wilds fundamentals — not a race to credits — and you will enter the full game with habits that pay off for hundreds of hours.
