Seikret and Slinger

Two tools define moment-to-moment flow in Monster Hunter Wilds: the Seikret mount and the Slinger. Together they replace long downtime — no more mandatory standing still to sharpen or drink potions while a Congalala wind-ups a gas cloud. The Prologue Demo introduces both systems within the first hour; this guide explains how to use them efficiently through To the Forest. For combat payoff once you dismount, read Combat Basics; for mission routing, see the walkthrough.

What is a Seikret?

Seikrets are mount companions assigned to every hunter in the Forbidden Lands. They are fast, agile, and combat-adjacent: they do not attack large monsters directly, but they track targets, carry a second weapon, stock a traveling item pouch, and let you perform maintenance while repositioning.

Think of the Seikret as your mobile safe zone. Veteran Monster Hunter players who reflexively stand still to heal will die less often once mount habits click.

Calling your Seikret: auto vs manual

The demo tutorial maps Seikret controls to the directional pad:

  • Auto call — routes you toward the current quest objective or tracked monster. Use between missions when you just want to follow scoutflies without micromanaging pathing.
  • Manual call — full player steering. Use in combat when you need to circle around Lala Barina or escape Chatacabra hop chains.

You can dismiss and recall freely in most field areas. If the mount is unavailable — certain cutscenes or cramped interiors — the UI tells you. When open world returns, remount immediately after crafting or gathering.

Combat actions while mounted

Mounted actions are the Seikret’s killer feature:

ActionWhy it matters
Sharpen weaponMaintain damage without sheathing in melee range
Drink potions / eatRecover HP while kiting
Use SlingerHarass or flash monsters during gaps
Swap weaponsChange entire moveset mid-hunt

Mount first, then perform the slow action while circling. Against Congalala, stench blocks items on foot — mount, create distance, deodorize if needed, then re-engage. Details on stench are in How to Beat Congalala.

Secondary weapon storage

Your Seikret holds a second weapon — either a different type or the same type with alternate build potential. Press the swap direction taught in tutorial to change on the fly.

Demo strategy: keep a melee main and ranged sub (or vice versa) before Lala Barina. Bow or Light Bowgun can delete florets and tail weak points while Great Sword handles knockdowns after traps. Browse types on the weapon guide and practice swaps in Weapon Training.

Seikret item pouch

The mount carries an item pouch restocked over time with helpful consumables — think of it as a bonus supply cache, not your primary inventory. Access it from the directional input shown in-game.

Do not ignore the pouch when your main bag runs dry mid-quest. It can bridge you back to camp before a boss rematch. Combine pouch items with Crafting and Meals prep for longer demo sessions.

Slinger fundamentals

The Slinger is a wrist-mounted launcher for stones, pods, nets, and specialty ammo. Sheathed, hold aim to move the reticle and fire. Drawn, many weapons still allow Slinger shots for utility.

Early demo uses include:

  • Stone — small chip damage and flinch setup.
  • Capture Net — endemic life for research and guild points.
  • Dung Pod — forces reposition; lifesaver in multi-small-monster packs.
  • Flash Pod — blinds flying or climbing foes; strong vs Lala Barina nest hangs.

Gather pod materials in the field and craft at pop-up camps. Keep flashes and traps stocked before mandatory large monsters listed on the monsters hub.

Slinger during Focus Mode

Wilds allows certain Slinger inputs while Focus Mode is active — typically via the alternate Slinger button (L3 on PlayStation). You can flash a monster, then immediately land a Focus Strike on a wound without fully exiting aim mode.

Practice the sequence on Chatacabra: flash → Focus Mode → Focus Strike on exposed leg wound. Full wound logic is in Combat Basics.

Scoutflies and tracking

While mounted, scoutflies continue pointing toward tracked monsters and quest targets. Auto-riding follows their trail — handy when searching for Congalala after Lynian dialogue in the Scarlet Forest. The walkthrough marks story triggers; scoutflies handle wilderness navigation.

Pop-up camps and Seikret synergy

Pop-up camps act as portable bases. Ride to camp, cook meals, craft Slinger ammo, swap gear from box, then auto-ride back to the hunt. Minimize foot travel once the mount is unlocked — every minute saved matters if you are evaluating the demo in one evening.

Common mistakes new players make

  1. Healing on foot in melee range — mount and circle.
  2. Forgetting weapon swap before elemental matchups — Fire for Lala Barina, Ice or Fire for Congalala.
  3. Empty Slinger going into boss arenas — craft at last camp.
  4. Manual riding only — auto path saves time on repeat quest failures.
  5. Dismounting for every gather node — some nodes are faster on foot; learn which ones via exploration.

Advanced demo tips

  • Chain mount → sharpen after every knockdown to keep purple sharpness.
  • Carry Dung Pods for Doshaguma trace areas if you wander off-story — even scent trails can lead to dangerous encounters in the full game; the demo teases this apex predator.
  • Palico climbs with you; do not wait for them before mounting — they catch up.
  • If paralysis florets cover the arena, mount out, clear space, re-enter on foot with wide swings.

Seikret and Slinger mastery separates hunters who finish the Prologue Demo in one sitting from those who retry the same boss for hours. Treat the mount as part of your kit, not just a taxi.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can the Seikret attack monsters in the demo?

No. Seikrets provide movement, tracking, item access, and weapon storage. All damage comes from your hunter, Palico, and Slinger tools.

How do I swap weapons on the Seikret?

While mounted, use the directional input shown in the tutorial — typically right on the D-pad — to switch between your primary weapon and the one stored on your mount.

What Slinger ammo should I craft for demo bosses?

Flash Pods and Shock Traps pair well with Focus Strikes. Dung Pods help against Congalala and crowded areas. Craft at pop-up camps before Lala Barina and Congalala.

Can I use the Slinger while my weapon is drawn?

Yes for many ammo types. Utility pods are designed for combat use. Focus Mode still allows certain Slinger shots via the alternate input.

Does Seikret auto-path work for optional exploration?

Auto routing follows active quest or track markers. Free exploration still benefits from manual riding and scoutfly trails.
